29/06/2006 The hook is more reliable than a «John Deere»
Turkmen Initiative for Human Rights
#301, 22.06.2006
Turkmenabat virtually «sank» in litter during the entire first half of June. None of the streets, parks and squares were cleaned. For two weeks containers with litter were not taken out of the city. All street cleaners and employees of the community services were engaged in wheat harvesting.
«All – to harvest the wheat!» - this appeal was made throughout the entire Lebap velayat. Yet, the wheat was harvested not by American combine harvesters «John Deere» the purchase of which is constantly being reported in Turkmen press but by the same old methods, manually - with a hook. Grandfather methods of grain harvesting must be recalled here: first to cut the wheat and then to tie the stook. The number of sheaves increases slowly in accordance with the talent of the non-professionals carrying out the work.
In addition to the street cleaners, employees of basically all organizations and industrial enterprises have been involved in the harvesting. Teachers have been saved by the final exams which have recently started in schools. People were sent to the most remote places of the Lebap velayat. For instance, the workers of the Itnit factory (thread plant) were taken to the Yulangyz area located in the south of the velayat at the border with Afghanistan.
“It`s so hard to harvest the wheat under the heat”, - says an engineer in the dockyard. – “We are urban residents and have never been involved in wheat harvesting. I have only seen how to do this in the old time movies. Now it is the 21st century and we mow the wheat with a hook! This is pure feudalism!”
Virtually the entire process of grain harvesting is done manually. The hook is apparently not only more reliable than an American combine harvester but also less expensive. And the work force costs nothing in Turkmenistan.
