There are frequent reports about the use of weapons by the Turkmen border guards against people trying to cross the Turkmen-Uzbek border illegally. When an Uzbek national becomes a victim of the border guards this information is leaked to the press, thus making the authorities launch investigations. When a victim is a citizen of Turkmenistan, the authorities try to silence this fact.
On 26 May Batyr Annayev (born in 1972) left his house in the Karadashli village of the Ilyaly etrap together with his friend. According to some information, they were involved in selling Turkmen fuel to neighboring Uzbekistan. On 29 May the parents of B.Annayev were informed that Batyr`s body had been found in the frontier collector (canal for carrying off drainage waters) and is presently being kept in the mortuary of Dashoguz.
The inner organs and brains were taken from the body of B.Annayev which was received by his relatives. Yet, there were also gun wounds seen on his body. No information about the reasons of his death was offered to the parents. There is also no data available about whether the investigation has been launched into his death.
