24/05/2006 OSCE Center cancels invitation
Turkmen Initiative for Human Rights
#285, 18.05.2006
In newsletter #279 of 8.05.2006 the TI reported that the OSCE Center had taken its lead from the Turkmen authorities and banned participation of journalists in the conference «Sustainable tourism development in Turkmenistan» held in Ashgabat on 3-4 May.
Here is the letter sent by the representative of the OSCE Center based in Ashgabat to the journalists invited to the conference. Unfortunately, as recent practice shows the OSCE prefers to cooperate with the regime to the detriment of its primary objectives, i.e. promotion of democracy and human rights protection. Regrettably, at present no one recalls the Moscow Mechanism evoked with regard to Turkmenistan in 2003.
Subject: Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development, 3 May 2006
Dear Journalists,
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan has informed the Centre that the Ministry does not have information about validity of accreditation of the journalists invited by the Centre to the conference on Sustainable Tourism Development in Turkmenistan on 3-4 May 2006 organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabad in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the State Committee of Tourism and Sports. Therefore, the Ministry objects the participation of the journalists in the conference.
The Centre regrets that against this background the invitation to the opening and the reception of the conference has to be withdrawn and apologizes for the inconvenience it might cause.
For further questions you are kindly requested to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
Best wishes,
Dieter Matthei
